NEW! Fish & Co. Express @ Downtown East

Fish & Co. has opened its first seafood express concept in Singapore. Located at Downtown East, the restaurant will offer inexpensive seafood and burger value meals (all at S$5.95) to cater to families, students and the working crowd. Fish & Co. Express also brings to customers new fish burgers such as the Teriyaki salmon burger, Jap mayo burger and the sambal burger – a burger with a local twist featuring fish crowned with spicy chilli sambal, crispy ikan bilis and cucumber.

Norwegian Chef wins the Olympics of cooking

Chef of the year 2001 and 2002 in Norway Geir Skeie has cooked his way up to the top spot at the Bocuse d’Or in France. Dubbed the Olympics of cooking, the chef beat out competitors from Sweden, France and twenty-one other countries and walked away with a cash prize of 20 000 euros (S$39 520) and a golden statue of master chef Paul Bocuse, whom the competition is named after. Japan, the top ranking Asian team came in eighth while Singapore, represented by chef Jason Tan came in 18th at the competition.

The five and a half hour contest involves creating dishes using Scottish Aberdeen Angus beef, fresh cod, scallops and wild shrimp from Norway. This is the fourth time a Norwegian chef has won the top prize in the twelve years this competition has been in session.

CASE Survey Reveal MOST Singapore Food Stalls Did Not Increase Prices

In a survey of 255 food samples conducted by CASE between November and December last year, CASE found that over a six-month period 70% of the food samples saw no change in prices, 10% decreased in prices while the remaining 20% increased in prices.

Pasta de Warku is offering BIGGER serving portions during bad times

Mr Kiyoshi Ueki, the man behind the Japanese pasta chain is offering bigger portions for both his low-priced set lunches and and a la carte dishes. Pasta de Waraku's pasta portions have gone up from 110g to 170g for set lunches, which include pizza or fried rice. A la carte portions have gone up from 180g to 220g.

Previously, diners had to pay $4 more for a bigger serving off the a la carte menu. All its four outlets display posters with the words "larger portion". The set lunch promotion has also been extended from 2.30pm to 5pm to attract students.

190,000 friends are worth less than a piece of meat

Would you choose a free hamburger over your online friends? That's a question Burger King is hoping to answer. The fast food chain has created a Facebook application that gives users in the US a free hamburger coupon of they get rid of 10 friends from the social networking website.

The application will then send the dumped friends an email letting them know they were sacrificed for a piece of beef.

So far, at least 190,000 friends have been sacrificed for a free lunch according to Burger King.

Chardonnay and Butter?

Ever wonder why Chardonnay has an unmistakably buttery aroma and flavour? Well, it’s a naturally occurring bi-product called diacetyl, a compound that also flavours butter and margarine, derived mainly from strains of lactic bacteria responsible for conducting malo-lactic fermentation (MLF).

Usually, MLF converts tart malic acid into the softer lactic acid, but it can also impart distinctive flavours. Many white wines avoid MLF to preserve acidity and grape derived flavours but Chardonnay is the notable exception as most benefit from the softened acidity and complex flavour of
diacetyl.
